Honoring Peace, Service and Community

Milledgeville, Georgia – The First Peace Community in the United States

The Rotary Club of Milledgeville is honored to be the home of the first Rotary Peace Monument in the United States, a landmark that symbolizes our enduring commitment to peace, unity, and service above self. With the installation of this historic monument, Milledgeville, Georgia was proudly designated as the first Peace Community in the United States, marking a significant moment in both Rotary’s history and our nation’s journey toward peace.

Standing at the Baldwin County Courthouse, the monument serves as a permanent reminder of the power of service, understanding, and collaboration in creating a more peaceful world. It reflects Rotary’s global mission to foster goodwill and prevent conflict through service and leadership.

Milledgeville Peace Monument

The History of the Peace Monument

The concept of the Rotary Peace Monument was brought to life under the leadership of 1995-96 Club President Sam Watson, 1996-97 Club President Jeff Crisp and Project Chair Brad Oliver. It was designed to reflect the core principles of Rotary, particularly our mission to promote peace, resolve conflict, and support humanitarian efforts worldwide.

On July 18, 1996, community members, local officials, and Rotarians gathered to witness its dedication. Since then, it has served as a permanent reminder of our shared responsibility to work toward a more peaceful and just world.
